I disagree.
I used a few sets of pilot sports,(Replaced by P.P) but found they wore out too fast. I switched to dunlop D220 sportmax touring. The D220 is no where near as sticky as the pilots, but lasts a hell of a lot longer. Grip very well in the wet, And cheaper! So they are heaps better for me. Riding hard with less traction is a lot of fun. You learn a lot.

ok, I bit the bullet and went with the BT14, which is a dual compound tyre. Cost me $295 fitted. I spoke with him about the Pirelli Diablo and the Michelin Pilot Power both around the same price and he said with all the commuting I did the middle of the tyre would be worn out in 6000km at the most. The dual compound, while it won't be as sticky, will wear less across the middle but has better grip on the sides, and on the extreme edge has no tread at all, so is kind of like a slick when on full tilt.
Here is a photo of the old tyre Dunlop D208 190/50/17:

the main reason I was in a hurry to replace it:

and the new BT14 190/50/17, I rode the long way home to try and scuff it up, did about 40km on it since it was put on:

as can be expected the new tyre felt 100 times better than the old worn one, so once I have scrubbed it in properly I will ge rid of those embarassing chicken strips.
thanks every one for the input and help, like i said I had never bought a big bike tyre before so all of the advice helped out heaps! Maybe when I get serious into track days I will save my money for the track bike and get a cheap shit run about for commuting on, until then I have to make compromises.
thanks everyone!

Stay clear of BT 020's if you plan on hitting the twisties up regularily. I recently got talked into having a rear put on my TL and havent been able to get enough heat into it in these winter months yet. Every time i start to push it slides. As a commuter tyre they would be alright, i've done 4000kms on them so far and can hardly notice any wear.
Anyone heard much about the new Dunlop Qualifier's? They are supposedly similiar to powers but with a faster warm up time. |

If your commuting, buy a more commuting tyre. Thats why they make different types of tyres *duh*. Horses for courses. It's not like commuting/touring tyres a shit, its just they have a slight bias towards durability thats all. You'll be fine and your wallet will thank you.
Note: See you've made the decision already, good stuff

Took the bike out to the Cotter today, the new tyre being only a day old. It's scrubbed in fairly well now, and didn't have any grip issues in the process. If anything the front was moving around a bit (something the cbr250rr didn't do), possibly because of the big 190 tyre on the back having more grip.
Front tyre will have to replaced soon and to top it off the fork seals need doing. does it ever end?

i think the 190 is a bit overkill. what size is the back rim, 5.5" or 6.0" ? i would go with a 180 reguardless.
definately go with something sticky on the front tho... pilot powers are nice

it will turn in faster with a 180 on the rear and will offer exactly the same grip

I agree, i got bt45 front and back. I travel 600+km a week. It looks like my back tyer is going to last 35000km+. Sorry but why would i waste my money on race rubber that 1. i am not going to get the benefit of 2. costs more, 3. wont last, thus 'doulbing' my costs |

i ran BT45's on my cbr250 and they were fine for that (got about 15k out of them and they still had plenty of tread left when i sold the bike)
but i wouldnt run them on anything bigger than a 250 unless it was a cruiser

I have BT45's on my 250 and found they were a perfectly capable tyre at the track...
But as you said... dont know about a bigger bike...

What tyres do you run on your R6 dylusion?

| i dont think its such a big issue, get some tyres that are good value - its not like its going to be the difference between first and second place. |

Had Pirelli Diablos before (finished them halfway back from oxley ) and was very happy with their performance at the track and warmed up pretty quick too...
Since then i have had a set of pilot powers fitted, they seem pretty sweet so far, although havent done much more then pick up some milk on them yet... looking forward to feeling the difference at the track, between the power and diablo.
What about you cheif?

I have a pair of BT-92's, which are at the crappier end of the range. Although they say they are a dual compound tyre. Although they are on the wear markers now, so I was thinking of trying something different. Not sure though
