BATTERY VOLTAGE WHILE STARTING A BIKE
I had my equipment hooked up to the bike to do sometesting... er... maintenance
, and thought I'd capture what happens to the battery voltage when you start a bike (CBR250RR in this case). The voltage was measured at the battery with low beam lights running prior to cranking. The battery (Dynavolt YTX7L-BS) is in good condition and only a couple of months old at about half charge.
BATTERY VOLTAGE vs TIME
Lead acid batteries will typically show 13V for a short period after charging, but will slowly drop to between 12.4V to 12.6V. A battery low on charge will be approaching 12V, but at 12V its not a good sign. Lead acid batteries hate being fully discharged. As a general rule of thumb, you shouldn't let a lead acid battery drop below 20% charge. If you going away on holiday, give the battery a full charge and leave the negative lead disconnected from the bike.
