Bike painting

Well I went to a paint shop to get some paint for my zx10r, but the problem is it will cost a fair bit to get it.

I am wanting to touch up and respray small bits that I have sanded back due to scratching in a crash. I took a little chunk of plastic with paint on it to get a colour match at the paint shop and the guy said it will cost $200 for all the paint which is a problem for me. It would come with 1l of paint, 1l of primer/filler and 1l of clear coat which is enough to paint the whole bike, I then asked whether he could do it in smaller tins but he said 1l is the minimum...

Now I thought fair enough but the fairings aren't clear coated, maybe he's ripping me.

So anyway am I being ripped? or if I'm not, is there a cheaper alternative?

He'd be charging you for the hardener and thinners as well (even though he's not buying them especially for you, you're going to consume them)

We pay $48 approx for 1L of single pack acrylic lacquer so it's probably not too bad, but you can get paint in smaller than 1L tins, it just depends on who you buy it from.

That being said, he probably has a preference for what paint he uses. Simple solution is to try someone else. Where abouts are you located?
tell him you want a sample tin to do a color test BEFORE u buy the 1l. because your not going to buy 1L of paint without checking if it matches. with any luck the sample tin is enough to finish the job.
I buy paints from VG Auto paints. Pretty sure 1L wouldn't cost that much
Where are you located? there is a guy near me that sells as low as 250ml of whatever you want
not sure how big the area is that needs painting but $200 to have it professionally sprayed seems about right. think of his time as well the paint that is being used. certainly price doesnt seem out of the ordinary if you want it done well

cheaper alternative would be to buy some stickers and cover up the damage with them!

He is only selling the paint and I'd have to spray. I just found it strange that he wanted to sell me the clear coat because the fairings aren't clear coated or at least don't look it.

I'm near Shepparton Victoria so there aren't many options available. I'll have a loom at some other stores.
Thats not entirely unusual for cost of paint. If it's metallic or has pearls its going to cost more. He'll spend a bit of time mixing the paint up, especially if he's eye matching it to a scratched bit of plastic. Just cause your paint doesn't have a clear coat doesn't mean that the paint he has can go without one. Bike paints are usually a bit different to car ones too. A lot of later model stuff isn't actually a paint, it's more like a dye. Plus you've got flex additives and all sorts of other crap.
with 1 litre you could paint 2 cars all you need is 200 ml

*just passing through*

no u cant

sounds about rite price wise,

assuming your using acrylic not 2pack
$40 primer ltr
$60-80 paint matched 500/1000ml
$40Dont need clear unless your paint is metalic
$40 thinners 4ltrs

2 pack will be complelty diffrent and u shouldnt be using it at home
I paid about $200-300 for the paint (approx 600ml) when I sprayed my cibblet. Although that was dupont 2pack or something... Not too sure - it was a long time ago.
2 pac won't be a problem for me, my dad has a spray booth with all the guns and also an ABN for the paint.

I don't think I'll go down the route of DIY painting and may take it to a spray place to sort out.

So why don't you just use his supplier for the paint??

I haven't really asked him about this but he gets his stuff from Wattyl and it's usually in 20l drums and he will get 4 at a time and I would only need a little pot.

I'll ask him in the morning.[hr]
He only spray lacquers and stains though but he should be able to do paint.
