completely dying while riding

so this hasnt happened before tonight.. it is however veryy cold tonight if that makesa any difference.

as i came to a stop with clutch in, engine completely died.. (lights and all still on).
started her up fine. took off down the road. (did another clutch-in stop to test. no die).
came to end of that road and slowed down in 2nd gear (no stop), but as slowing down. the lights flickered off for a second and the engine died. and then lights back on.
started her up fine again..
took off. bout 50m later, lights off, engine died and lights didn't automatically come back on..
had to start her up again before lights came back..

(rpm went crazy just before dying.. ie.. rpm wasnt actually climbing and falling. but the tacho was).

i've read someone having this problem before on old forum but don't know how/if can access old forum and still do searches.

any help appreciated,
cheers[hr]
update: found an old post. someone with similar problem..
somethin bout the reg/rec bein a likely cause.

is that true?
to be honest I don't really know what the regulator/rectifier;s purpose is / where it is / how much to replace etc.

Obviously electrical issue. I cant be much help sorry but I would start at the fuses (behind top of the left side fairing) and also check the battery terminals.

Has the engine performance changed in anyway ?

EDIT: 1000th Post W00 haha
i think i remember reading about this before and it being a reg/rec issue
not too sure

but eclipze is your man
he knows everything about them and even sells them for a decent price
First check if the connections to the battery terminals and starter solenoid are nice and clean and tight.

While you are at it, clean them up with some emery paper
then spray some terminal protector spray to prevent it from corrosion
Forgot to mention that it could also be a faulty iginition switch.
I opened this thread in great anticipation, i thought you were talking about completely dying while riding, i.e. crashing to the point of death... :huh:

Anyway, sorry I am not of assistance.

I know if your low on fuel and just run out your bike tends to start choking on itself, have you tried looking on the back right side fairing. Open it up and you'll find something small like that link connected.

This also could be at help

I dont know if you could partly die while riding, or doing anything else for that matter.
Check the main fuse next to the battery. It might be loose, dirty or not seated right.
BTW... check the fuse, not the spare fuse too ;).
thanks chaps,
just got home and it died while slowing down with clutch in again this morning. grr.

@eclipze,blackness.
i'll check the fuses

@k916
terminals, alrighty.
but start solenoid? <<-- don't know what/where

@aj26
ta for link.

@viper
. must get me a can o' that spray if its helpful.[hr]
fuses look fine themself.
connector to fuse box right next to barrery has all white shit on the connectors tho (inside the plug thing).
should this need cleaning? wd40? orr?

battery terminals look fine.

(ps i dont know what the flat black box just next to, behind the battery is.) would be helpful to know that.
um..
what else can i check and how

Follow the postive lead of the battery. You will find a cylinderical object with a funny green/pink plactic cover. That is the starter solenoid.

Pry the cover off very very gently and thats where you will find the fuse that Eclipse mentions

+1, My old cbr250 had intermittant stop starting over bumps etc sometimes and i found it to be the ignition barrel.. I tightened up the torx screws on the underside plastic cap, and found it then clicked to each spot with the key much firmer and problemo solved..
Just fiddle with the key a little whilst the engine is running and if it switches off etc thats your problem..
@k916.
is that the box with the fuse in it with the number 30 on it? with a pink plug-cap. (tis like right next to the battery on the right-hand side)
whatever that is, has white shite all over the connector plugs.. cant clean it off though cause its encased by a plug thing, is there somethin i can spray in there nd use a toothbrush or somethin to clean.

@bikerwog
i'll test that, ta.
