crack in fairing

2481 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  matt69
I noticed a small crack on my lower right fairing, about 2-3 inch's in length. It is where the rubber gromet insert is. Sorry hard to describe. What is the best way to fix this without have to take it to a shop? The budget is tight right now. Thanks

This is the cheap and nasty way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuA6d49Z7Rc

Justin.
I read some where that you can make your own ABS glue by using acetone and a plastic coat hanger and use that to fix fairings.

They ground a "V" along the crack and filled it in with this glue and then sand it back and did all the paint work again.
I have used the plastic white stirring coffee thing from mc donalds and a soldering iron on the back side of the fairing.
lol fitzy that's ghetto.
He is on a budget lol..it works also...cheap plastic repair at its best :)

Standard ghetto is to use a cable tie in the same fashion.

cring at all your suggestions,
For the record Acetone wont melt ABS straight out, I've tried it,

fiberglass (epoxy not polyester) or a soldering iron (350 oC) is as cheap as it gets
Found out recently that you can make fairing lugs with modeling clay (for the mold) and a fake nail kit, the one that has the powder and the liquid. Half the price of plastex and works a treat. I made 4 lugs for the race bike fairings and still have enough left for about 6 more I reckon. I reinforced mine with some fibreglass to be sure. Got a strange look from the chick at Proiceline when I asked for the kit though!

The best for a crack would be a 2 part epoxy. I just bought a heat gun kit that has abs plastic welding rods in it also.
