Dealer buying your bike

Well bikesales/gumtree has introduced me to plenty of spammers so I'm considering this option.

For reference: 2004 vtr250, 455xxkm, mechanically fine but due for service, needs new rear, slight cosmetic damage, cf pipe.

Team moto bloke gave me a range of 1-3k on the phone, obviously assessing it in person might be different but the range given leads me to believe it isn't worth the trouble.

Would this range be par for the course? With a new rear/service the bike would be worth 5k or thereabouts so I was hoping to be knocking on the 4k mark.

you will get on average 60-70% of the actuall bike value from a dealer.. dont waste your time.. try bike forums, ebay, trading post. gumtree is crap imo.. some spammers and time wasters will happen sadly.. just how it goes
You'll get raped at a dealer. That much is certain.
My favourite scammer is the one who texted me, asking to email him.

A+ for effort, I suppose.

Thanks for the advice.
selling to a dealer is most definately a last resort

You'll get a better price than that. The VTR 250 is highly rated as one of the best learner bikes by older riders. I honestly think you will sell it quite easily putting a $5000 sign on it and parking it on the side of the road.

Or sell it on ebay.
Depends on how much of a hurry you are in. If you are not in a rush put it up on bikesales ebay etc. But if your going overseas and need it gone by a certain date just remember that a dealer is a last resort.

It is on bikesales for 4.5k currently.

I'm 'in a hurry' in the sense that my mates are going on a trip and I want to go, but not so much that I'll take 3k.

Might try ebay.
dealer has offered me $2.5k for my bike, im only getting timewasters so far and if i can only get $3k i might as well use it as a trade in...

you might as well get the extra 500 too....
If you're left with no alternative and decide to sell to a dealer, you might as well just drop the price and let someone get the steal. At least then it wouldn't be a dealership taking someone for a ride.
Are you offering your gear+helmet+ stand etc? I know you may want to keep it but its always a bit extra to sweeten the deal and seeign as you dont have a bike you wont be using it.
