hey guys, found a mc22 today at the smash repairs near my work.. has been sitting there outside since mid 2008, well rego ran out september 08, so im guessing it was crashed before then.

chain is rusted beyond belief,

had a look over it and its got some heavy front on damage.. frame looks fine. forks look bent and nose cone fairing is non existant anymore, plastic on dash is smashed, rhs clip on has been obliterated on the plus side, it wasnt insured, so its not a write off at all, and the rear of the bike is mint. wheels look good aswell as the discs.

offered a bargin basement price and the dude accepted, probably pick it up in a few weeks.

bought it for parts honestly,(has an aftermarket exhaust and brand new discs front and rear) but might fix it up if its worthwhile.

what are the main things i should be checking with a bike like this? new oil/battery obviously, carb clean etc, but is there likely to be any major engine problems from sitting in the elements for a few years?

cheers[hr]
ps, anyone near chelsea smash a 1991 black cbr250rr mid 2008 lol?

How in the elements? first off check for external indications of problems, oil or coolant weep marks, white corrosion around bolt heads, that sort of thing, they're going to tell you where the problems are. Also, check around the head stem welds for cracking and frame dents/buckling, just because its not listed as a write off doesn't mean that it shouldn't be one. After that strip the carbs, check the valve clearances, change the oil, maybe turn it over by hand a few times to make sure that everything is sweet, then put a new battery in it and give it a crank... probably the spark plugs will be worse for the wear as well, pull them out and get them sorted when you look at the valves ;)

Your bank balance , I'd check for water in the bores...

paying between $350 and $500.. depending on a few things when i give it a good look over.

God, please, NO! The bores will most likely be seized or on the verge of it. Best case scenario is they are clean and devoid of lubrication. Remove the spark plugs and pour a teaspoon of oil or diesel fuel into each cylinder, and let sit overnight. This will lube the piston rings and (hopefully) gudgeon pins, thus allowing a clean snatch-free (bah haha!) start.

Replace the spark plugs, battery, coolant, oil, brake fluid, filters and fuel. You will need to drain and clean the carbies, as well as check all electrical connections such as battery terminals and crucial stuff like ignition.

After you get her started (shouldn't be more than I've mentioned) you can go from there with diagnostics.

turning it over by hand isnt going to matter to the gudgeons, so you dont need to hope they get lubed, Drew said turn it ove rby hand becasue if you have any problems turning it you can stop and you wont do any bore damage, Hes a smart fella, he knows what he's talking about. Go for it mate, Turn it by hand if there are any signs of friction just stop and you shouldnt do any damage (take the plugs out obviously or else you will get hit with compression and you wont be able to tell.)

For sure. Just saying that lubrication will make things easier. Not having a shot at anyone.

sweet, cheers for that...

also, the front discs are a bit rusted, can i just go over these with a fine sandpaper? or will this make the discs even worse?

edit : my current bike is a rep write off.. if i cant get this thing running, can i just swap the frames between both bikes, re-register it and not be burdened with the rep write off status anymore? or is it a little more complicated than that?

If this bargain MC22 has all the air box and tank on it, then I doubt whether the engine will have water in the bores. Maybe some rust, but that's it if any.

I've had many that have sat idle for many years, some oil in plugs and vroom.
