How in the elements? first off check for external indications of problems, oil or coolant weep marks, white corrosion around bolt heads, that sort of thing, they're going to tell you where the problems are. Also, check around the head stem welds for cracking and frame dents/buckling, just because its not listed as a write off doesn't mean that it shouldn't be one. After that strip the carbs, check the valve clearances,change the oil, maybe turn it over by hand a few times to make sure that everything is sweet, then put a new battery in it and give it a crank... probably the spark plugs will be worse for the wear as well, pull them out and get them sorted when you look at the valves
