Front Cover Sprocket - Metal object/bracket?

2507 Views 9 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  aj26
I have owned a mc22 for about 2 months now and doing some standard maintanence on the bike.

Pulled off the front cover sprocket to clean and lube the chain and noticed this metal object/bracket that looks like a boomerang (sorry no pics) but im sure most of you know what i'm talking about.

What is it's purpose? To stop the chain from slipping off the front sprocket?

Anyone ride without this metal object/bracket?
Is it necessary to have it?

it is there cause there is a gap if you leave it off from memory, sort of like a washer/plate type thing.
if it wasnt necessary they wouldnt have put it there and yes i know what you are talking about, i cleaned it too
By law you need to have a front sprocket cover.
yeah but that little metal insert that sits between the cover and the gear casing. I always wondered what it was for too, it had a nut welded onto it too like something is suipposed to screw in.

didn't know it was required by law though richo, what about the chain guard? I haven't had mine on for months now...

Both are required.

My sprocket cover is gone, as is chain guard, but replaced by one that sits under the swingarm as required by MA.

been riding without my chain guard for a few months aswell lol.
I gotta prop something under it to make room for my big ass sprocket.
Guess i'll leave that metal bracket there.
Was just curious about it and was thinking whether I could live without it.
Could have made the bike a wee tad lighter.
