Senior NSW police say the Roads and Traffic Authority is considering plans to reduce the amount of leeway given to speeding motorists to as low as 4 km/h.
The proposal, which would follow a similar take-no-prisoners approach by the Victorian government, has drawn criticism from senior highway patrol officers, who believe the margin for error is too small, The Sun-Herald says.
The reduced tolerances are part of a tougher stance on speeding adopted by the NSW government, which includes six mobile speed cameras appearing on Sydney streets from July 19.
Driving fines are expected to rise by $137 million in the next year, partially because of mobile speed cameras, the state budget reported.
The cameras, which can fine six drivers every second, will be set up in white Ford Territory vans operated by RTA-contracted company Redflex. Signs will inform drivers they have been "checked" after they pass the vans, which also shoot video.
One senior Sydney policeman told The Sun-Herald, on condition of anonymity, that a 4 km/h tolerance is so small that a new set of tyres or the width of a speedometer needle could land motorists on the wrong side of the law. He said some radars have an error margin of plus or minus 3 km/h, while most police allow a margin of 8 or 9 km/h at 60 km/h.
The RTA is responsible for the limit on fixed cameras, as well as those in the new mobile vans.
An RTA spokeswoman said: "The RTA does not discuss enforcement thresholds on road safety grounds." But she did not deny the hardline approach is being considered, the paper says.

speedos are not always accurate and neither are some of the speed cameras
so even if your following the speed limit you could get fined because of a faulty speed camera
fuckers just want more and more money
at least your ctp isnt as expensive as ours

the police still have there own system of overlooking minor speeding as said in the OP
so this come down to rta controlled camera's. like the redlight+speed, speed, and the new mobile camera.

its a bit retarded. my mate was told by suzuki that they wouldnt fix his speedo under warrenty, it was reading about 15% off and they said that that was within their 20% guidlines. im just quoting what he told me.

in the last week when i caught the train 5 times, the train was late 4 days
this also happens when i take the train to school
cops are busy busting people for not buying a ticket or having their legs up on the seat, whereas theres fucking dickheads roaming the city and mugging people and cops are nowhere to be seen until someone steps up to fight them
then the cops step in and charge the guy for defending himself
then theres this shitty rta
all they care about is making more money and passing it off as "to make roads safer"
i disagree, this is to keep the fuckers with a job
i mean why else do we have to pay rego every year even though i havent really seen any improvement in the roads
i mean fair enough we pay for using the roads, but why every fucking year
if they did something to make the roads better then that would be fine, but the roads are still the same
plus we pay for the e tag to pay for tolls
and now theres the shitty increase in ctp
paying 85% more
great....coz I can really do more damage to a person or more than 1 person on a bike than in a car
my dad with 5 or 6 demerit points paid less for his car than what I will have to for my bike
makes a lot of sense

The fact is every one whinges about transport in this sate (car drivers ,bike riders, pushbike riders and people who use public transport) But that as far as they get. Ever wonder why pollies listen to old people? They write to the local mp's and hassle them! Apparentley thats not cool if your young. Most of society these days are sheep. They do what there told even if its unfair. And they only talk about doing somthing. A protest that lasts one day does nothing. It needs corespondace before and after. That is how our system works like it or not. Imagine a full train load of students on one train line. It would shut the system down!
