What is wrong with me? I just can't let a cheap bike go.

Here's the story.

My mate asked me to look at a ute on ebay near my house for him. He offered to pay for my time, no problems.

I had a good chat with the owner and he asked me what I do. I told him that i tinker with bikes doing resto work.

I went and had a look at the ute, took it for a drive and when I came back the owner asked me if I was interested in a bike.

Yeah, show me.

A honda XR80 1988 model. He told me that the compression was a tad low and it fouled plugs.

We haggled on a price, so I came back with trailer and $300.

It's really weird as i was thinking about buying a XR80-100 so I can chase my son around, my wife can also have a go and when my son gets bigger he can ride the XR80 and my daughter will get the JR50.

I couldn't help myself so i got stuck into tonight. removed the carby and air box. gave the carby and good clean and flushed the fuel tank.

After what seemed hours trying to start the bastard I was just about to give up and it fired. Wasn't too long before it died after blowing some smoke.

It seems that it has too much oil in it and that's fouling the plug. Or the rings could be stuffed as the air filter wasn't really there at all.

Here she is!

I will check the oil again after I do some searching tonight and get a another plug for it.

I've been searching already and I found that a XR100 motor will bolt straight in and I can also get a big bore kit from the states.

I tell you, I'm a sick man. I just can't leave anything stock.

It's hard as often I'm waiting around for either parts to turn up or the painting to finish stuff, so that's why I start so many projects.

At least i can't say that I'm bored.

You can't go too far wrong with an XR, those things just refuse to die.
You get it running well and give it the minimum of tlc and it will probably outlive your grandkids.
If you can, I would recommend trying to fit a disc brake front. If not, make sure you rough up the pads.

Stud:

Sneddy is right, that is a steal for $300. You made a good choice. With a small dose of the Stud "magic touch" and a few minor tweaks, this little machine will bring years of fun to the entire Stud family, large, small and everyone in between. Besides, there is no better way to get experience riding a motorcycle than to learn on one of these. Yes this little bike will prove to be a very reliable source of fun and inspiration for many generations of Stud offspring, as well as to all of the many close friends, some not so close friends, friends of the family, relatives, distant relatives, neighbours, friends of neighbours, visitors, friends of visitors and all others who are lucky enough to pay a visit to the Stud household over the years to come

Put all neons and rice bling on it and a detonator in the fuel tank and let them have it :D

those junky's are going to love that shit.......lol jke..
You should see the size of the chain I got around it at the moment. Once I get it going it will live here at my place.

I did some internet searching at it seems that this bike has points.

I do recall and old XR75 that I had years ago with an issue with the wood ruff key that holds the magneto on.

Time to remove the cover me thinks.

So what about your mate? I'm guessing he didn't get the ute because you had to go home and get a trailer. Right?
The ute is on ebay and he wanted me to look at it for him. reason being that he is neither mechanical minded and too faraway to just pop out down the road.

I told him to go for the ute as it's in pretty good nick for it's age.

A cr front end should fit and you get disk brake and newer forks.

I put a '91 cr250 front end on a '82 xl500. Best mod ever for that bike. $600 for the whole lot - clamps, forks, master cylinder/caliper/disk, wheel.

That's double what I paid for the bike.

I couldn't sleep this morning so i went to my workshop about 4.45am. I was hoping to find a junkie trying to break in..

I pulled the magneto cover off and water poured all over my work bench.

It seems that the magneto cover gasket wasn't sealing (someone had bodged it up) and water was trapped in the magneto, coils and points.

It was messy under there, but after some scrubbing, cleaning and resetting the points gap this little bike fired up first kick.

I wouldn't even call it kick, more of a prime to kick.

Blew smoke for a while, so i drain the access oil. Engines a bit rattling so it's either the tappets, loose cam chain or piston slap.

It's very hard to pin point as I still have this stupid flu and my hearing is blocked (has been for a week).

Anyway i had a blast doing donuts, power slides and all other things you do on these things.

I'll guess I'll hold off on the big bore kit for now.
