Hey everyone!

I'm from Adelaide and yeah as you can see I'm new on here, I've been lurking around for info/pics/tips for the last few weeks before finally joining up to the site!
Reason being, I pick up my first bike on Wednesday :)

1989 CBR250R, MC19. I love the look with the "Hurricane" stickering.
So yeah, on my L's, it's my first bike and I have had a scooter previously.
My old man is going to kill me but I don't think any parents would be too thrilled....

As for the bike itself, it needs a new rear tyre. The front has A Pirelli Demon Sport and I'm thinking of going with the Michelin Pilot Power CT2 (I think?)
$218 fitted on the rear. How does this sound?
The bike has a few kms, but I've heard they're pretty reliable bikes if treated well.

Also the shocks are probably a bit soft so if anyone is willing to give me a hand doing the front shocks/guiding me (favourite choice of lager will obviously be offered:)) that would be awesome as I'd love to learn more about the bike from someone more experienced.
I've worked with all my cars for the previous 6 years so I hope there's some mechanical knowledge there!

I'll get some pics up as soon as I get the bike!
I'm sure I'll feel right at home here!
Nicholas

Oh also, I've heard it being thrown around a bit, it's better to use normal 91ron fuel, as opposed to say BP Ultimate (Although I'd love to boycott the bastards)

Edit: Haha, I also realise I probably should have put this in the CBR250 forum.... my bad.

Nah - this is a good place to post your intro too! Welcome to the forum and I'm looking forward to the pics of the bike once you take delivery!

Best tyres for the 250 though would be the Bridgestone BT45 (Sports Tourer), BT090 or Dunlop GPR10a (Sports Road/Track). Pilot Powers of any type are probably meant to a bigger bike and you wouldn't get the heat needed in the tyre to get max grip.

As for the shocks, there's the so called 20 cent mod, and not to mention that some fresh shock oil would do a world of good anyway. Here's a link to the old forum (it was recently upgraded) which has a walkthrough on working on the forks.

Plenty of good threads in the new and old maintenance forums for you to read! Enjoy your stay!

Welcome mate,
Fuck it, my mum got over it and i announced it by rocking up to family Christmas on my MC22 :)
Where bouts are you located?
Mixing tyres front and rear I've heard isnt the greatest idea but wait for one of the old farts to chime in.
As far as shocks go, doing the RR's is a breeze, i assume the R cant be to far off.
Good to hear some of those fuckign scooter riders are realising where its at :D

^ This place works? lol

Welcome - I had an MC19 back in the day and they are a great bike. Tyres wise, stick with a paried combination instead of two different ones as I've read on here many times that two different profiles of tyre will make turning feel odd. Any unleaded fuel will do, the higher stuff isnt quite as good for the small engine.

Bikes are way safer than scooters, providing you wear the gear :D

Thanks for the replies everyone!
Cheers for moving this btw.

Alright cheers for the tyre info, I'll look for another Pirelli Sport Demon for the rear.
The front one is still mint.
Anyone know of a decent Pirelli dealer here in Adelaide? if not I'll just do the ol' ring around.
Is it strange that the thought of spending money on the bike is a good feeling?? lol.

And yeah I'm prepared for the worst from the folks haha, although I'm not going to be bringing the bike back :p
And yeah, I never thought I'd actually get a bike but after riding the scooter, the feeling of being free, open and well almost like flying, it's.......... AWESOME!!!

But yeah, I'm in Adelaide, in Burnside.
Not sure how many of you guys/girls are from Adelaide? But I'm right at the bottom of Greenhill road...... well, the twisty bit ;) the road to Mt Lofty is literally a 30 sec ride!

Cheers for the warm welcome everyone, bike pics will be up ASAP!
Nicholas.

Firstly, Welcome!
Have you ridden a bike before? if not, the feeling of being free becomes very apparent when sliding down the road .
Be careful, its a totally different ball game... and ill see you around.

Yeah I've ridden a bike before.
And thanks dad for the safety message.

Not to sound like a know it all 20 something year old, but yeah I know that it's dangerous, I know I can die, that everyone on the road are murderers and will try to knock you of your bike at any chance and I know that experience and awareness (apart from bike abstinence) are the best things to stop me from being killed, so I'm gonna go out and get some experience :)

Thanks for the concern, but I've had it drilled into me pretty hard at home and by my uncles, who've been riding for 30 years, one has a Duc 748, sexy sexy bike! But they've all told me not to get a bike in the first place.

I'm not your typical hoon, I'm over that, but honestly it's mostly due to the cost of getting fined.
In the year that I had my scooter I had a few close calls with people turning at intersections at night where they didn't see me, my light was on too :s but I managed to get out of them.
I ended up selling the scooter to a mate, who 2 weeks later, was hit into by a woman giving her child a dummy who was in the back seat while driving through a round about....

But yeah thanks for the concern, I just can't wait to go out and ride!!!

Hay and welcome. If you thought driving up and down those roads was fun then your gonna love it on your bike. And the best thing is you don't even have to speed to have a great time. Give us a shout when you want a ride, i also have a mc19 but mine is off the road atm as my number plate fell off and i received a nice big ($547) fine  shouldn't be too long till the new one is in the mail box

Hey I finally got my bike!! So nice to ride, got my new sport demon on the rear now too, just have to scrub it in. Was such a nice day today too.
Umm, stupid question I know, but is it possible that the "fuel/reserve" switch is backwards? I had a look and reserve was pointing up... Any reason someone would run a bike on reserve???

Also, is there usually a number plate lamp? A fender eliminator/chop has been applied and yeah, no number plate light. And also the rego is stuck onto the screen... I'll need a rego holder I guess.

Apart from that stuff, the bike is great!

Nice to ride, starts first time every time and well yeah stoked for $2500 I think I did pretty good!

I'll get pics up for you all asap!!!

Alright been riding the bike around a little.
Mostly doing like 15 min rides..... to uni, but taking the long way, trying to get charge into the poor battery.
The bike was a bitch to start yesterday, and this morning it didn't start, had to give her a push, which at 6:30am is something you really cbf doing.

So anyway it was still kicking over.
Got to uni though, pulled up into a park and turned her off.
Just to see how much charge went back in I pressed the start button, nothin'
Pressed again, a whirr from the starter., I started getting worried.

So I took my hour long lecture, hopped on the bike, push started to the bike shop to ask some Q's.
as I pulled up, it stalled. Bike was warm, idling at 1500 and then nothing.
Spoke to the guy there, he's gonna charge + load test the battery for me if I take it out and bring it in.

So then on the way home I decide to go for a spirited ride though the hills, maybe putting some charge in the bike. I get home and pop the seat off to get to battery, and notice the positive lead isn't even connected properly! loose as how you say..... sleeve of wizard?
Anyway the previous owner didn't bolt them up properly cause the screws were mis matched..... so in all seriousness pure laziness was at fault.

So after that story, I have a couple of Qs.
Will the jiggling of the positive terminal have any detrimental effects on the bike? or the battery for that matter?
Is the loose positive terminal causing the loss in voltage/inability to start?
And should I be able to save the poor battery?

Nicholas
