Problems

Ok i've got a couple of problems with my bike and just need some advice as to what could be wrong and how to solve it

firstly in the last 2 weeks, my speedo has started playing up
it flickers a lot even when im going at a constant speed
by flicker i dont mean from 60-55/65, i mean from 60-80/90
like it keeps flickering between 60 and 80 continuosly
it generally happens when im over 60 and its not a constant issue
theres been many times when it works fine, but theres been times when it starts flickering a lot and its way too annoying, specially near speed cams

secondly, recently i've noticed a noise generally on my way to work
i thought it might be the wind against my helmet as on the way back i wouldnt hear it, but it doesnt sound like wind blowing past my helmet
but then again when i come to a complete stop the noise is gone
so just to be on the safe side, i wanted a second opinion

First one sounds like your speedo cable might just be fraying a little or something and causing problems when it's spinning past a certain speed.
Could be the cause of the noise too.

What's the noise sound like? What kind of area is it coming from?

You need to lube your speedo cable mate, It's probably just catching on the liner. Some other people have had this problem and they needed to replace their nut that sits on the front sprocket. look at your nut(s) :p and lube your cable. From what I have heard this will be fixed for under $10 and 15mins of your time.
have you inspected the speedo cable and connections?

what does the noise sound like you speak of? your description is very broad.

Welcome to the life of a mechanic.

I shit you not, but a guy came to pick up his new bike the other day and said "I'm here to pick up my 450" when we asked which one, he said "The Yamaha". :dodgy:
the noise....hmm, hard to explain
its like a whistle/sorta screeching but not like a nail on a blackboard noise

i think that could be the cause of the noise
coz i just realised everytime i heard the noise, i think the speedo was playing up
i'll just check it again just to be sure

hmm where do i disconnect the cable from?
and any other things i should know?
Take a gander at your front wheel, there'll be a cable coming off a device on the opposite side of the brake (Assuming you have an MC19 by your profile). That's the speedo cable, follow it back to your dash. Check the connection on both sides is tight, if it is, maybe pull it off and check the cable itself (please note though, when you put it back in make sure it's in correctly, don't just force it in - you might break it or find the speedo won't read).
wow that sounds fairly easy
what if i need to lube the cable?
do i just disconnect it from the speedo, take the inside wire out, lube it and then put it back again?
thanks
Honestly I'm not sure about lubing a speedo cable.
Never done it myself so I don't know if there's something special you have to do, sorry.
thats alright
thanks for your help
WD40 down the tube? Dont ask me, I go on my impulses.
is wd 40 used as lube?
coz as far as im aware it only takes out rust and sticky stuff
ARGH! DON'T USE WD40!

FFS I wish people would stop recommending that shit.

Use a proper cable lube, it should come with a straw attached to the side of the can, pull the speedo cable off, put the straw in the nozzle of the can, jam the now connected straw into the part where the steel wire disappears into the jacket, wrap the lot in a cloth and then spray until you see cable lube comming out of the other end of the cable.

Once again, DO NOT USE WD40, it will fuck your cable up, like most things if you spray it on them.
