Hey all,

I may become an official member, but i guess it depends on my purchase.

I was after and MC19 or MC22, but the prices (here in North America) are getting too crazy. One cannot really be had for less than 6500USD, and that wouldnt even be a mint one (but decent).

I have a line on a MC17, that is really clean and has very low km. It would be about 4000usd. the only thing holding me off is the aesthetics as well as the ability to sell it if I didn't end up liking it (or needed the cash).

Hard to find any recent comparable sales on clean MC17s. Anyone have any advice?

I know it sounds crazy but i like my bikes to be somewhat liquid assets as I like to change things up a lot. And yes, it can be done, and yes one can do it without losing a cent.

The issue I'd have with buying an MC17 is parts. MC22 is fun enough to find parts for, and only getting "more fun". There are collectors that will scoop up an mc17 at the right price in a heartbeat (I've seen pics of one in the USA, and I'm willing to bet that buyer would jump on it if he knows about it.) You have more options in canadia when it comes to mc22s from what I can tell, just be patient.

How do you tell the diff? Mine is a 2011 Might sell it
MC41 CBR250R 2011-2014 steel-frame 1-cylinder 26.7bhp 10500rpm redline 87mph top-speed

MC17 CBR250R 1987 alloy-frame 4-cylinder 45bhp 19500rpm redline 120mph top-speed
MC19 CBR250R 1988-1989 alloy-frame 4-cylinder 45bhp 19000rpm redline 122mph top-speed
MC22 CBR250RR 1990-2000 alloy-frame 4-cylinder 45bhp 19000rpm redline 124mph top-speed

later MC22 were restricted in power by various regulations. Easy enough to use ignition box from earlier un-restricted models. Here's pic of my MC22

SonnyJim, I too, am in North America. Texas specifically. Yes, these 250's are rare here in the U.S., but not impossible to sell. If this MC17 has a clean title and it's in good shape, it shouldn't be impossible to sell if you grow tired of it. The thing about them is, the great sound. They have no torque to speak of, so winding them up requires patience and good timing. Getting them around a racetrack quickly requires momentum and smooth riding. But the sound they make will never leave your brain.

87 tops? I've seen 97 indicated (slight downhill with a tailwind), and it usually topped out at 94mph. I seriously doubt the full exhaust and ECU tune gave that much more power, then again replacing the exhaust was like cutting an anchor loose.
There's also speedo error common on most bikes. U.S. regulations say speedo can read faster than, but never slower than actual speed. My track Ninja 250 in original stock form indicated 105 down front-straight at Thunderhill! Knowing perfectly well numerous models have been radar-tested with 97mph top-speed, hahahahah... Anyway, after I installed TrailTech Vapour dash and measured roll-out to millimeter, next time out it showed... 97mph!

After usual mods: high-comp pistons, cams, full-exhaust & dyno-tuning, got it up to real 115mph! :) That bumped me up from Production to 250 Superbike class where everyone's got same mods anyway. Made for some fun close racing!

Yeah could be speedo error. Never had anyone intentionally follow me to see where it actually topped out with an accurate GPS. One a group ride I lead once the guy behind me did comment "do you ride that thing WFO the whole time? I swear you were running 90+ everywhere you could".
