Sorry, too busy at the moment to find the old thread...

Had a few days off so i was able to get stuck into the RZ500 again. Made some really good progress in spite of a few minor set backs.

I let the pictures speak.

Yes, they are the original klms for this bike.

Cables everywhere. It's a good thing that I took heaps of pictures before I pulled this bike apart and it's been very handy to have the lap top in the work shop while I'm building this.

I also couldn't believe how many brackets were bent from his crash back 20 years ago. Even cable brackets were bent.

I was fiddling for a while to get them all adjust right again.

This is his original tool kit when he bought the bike.

Manage to fire it up today. Sounds great. Nice even smoke (even though it doesn't look like it) and pretty quiet too.

Such a relief to hear fire up after being in so many pieces as you would imagine.

Problem is now that I'm starting to want one of my own.

enjoy ^^
Studricho:

Just once and only once, I heard one of these bikes running.
I was just going in to work, I had parked my car, got out and
started walking toward this bike. I had no idea what I
was listening to. It turns out, this guy was just finishing work
and just warming up the bike to go home. I approached it from
the back and saw no fewer than four exhaust pipes
emitting a light blue coloured smoke, and yes, that
familiar sweet smelling two stroke odor filled the air.

He was talking to someone else so I didn't get a chance to
talk to him. Once I realized what kind of bike it was and listened
to the sound of the four exhausts all singing in sweet harmony,
I spent the rest of that day in a state which could only be
described as an "out of body" experience. I can't imagine how
sweet it would be to crank on the throttle and have that motor
hit its powerband. You are a very lucky guy to be able to
enjoy even hearing that motor sing and smell that two stroke smell.
That was the first and only time I was lucky enough to have ever
seen or heard one of these bikes in all its red and white glory.
I am totally envious. Have fun and enjoy your project

Thanks psidey. It's funny that growing up I never really followed anything in my life. Yeah I was into bikes, but I didn't know the famous riders even when I bump shoulders with them on a weekly basis sometimes.

It was only when I was chatting with this same bloke that was in the shop standing next to the Wayne Gardner full size cardboard cut out that it was actually Wayne Gardner himself.

I was very blessed (didn't know at the time) to be working at the time when many of the old bikes would pass through our doors.

RD, RZ, 250, 350 and 500. VFR1000, CB1000 boldor and all the other greats of the mid to late 80's and yet I didn't appreciate to now.

Yes, it's great to hear this thing and it does leave in a sense of a trance, I can still hear the bike now.

I love to get a you tube clip of it.
Wayne's a ledgend, i have posters of him on the old Rothmans nsr up thru the shed and my good mates named after him haha.
that it all.
i'm so jealous studricho, i've only seen one of these rz500's and it was in a motorcycle museum in tazi. they had it for sale too for a whopping 13K but it is a beautiful bike. it is quite an experience working on the 2t's. totally new scenery with all the power-valve cables, oil pump and beautiful expansion chambers. so are you just giving it a full rebuild turning her into an even wilder beast or just a fix?
cool, wiseco pistons

must be one special machine!

That would be cool. maybe I could met up with you guys down your way.

And too think you thought that your old zzr250 was worth spending money on to get faster around a track.
Excellent thread.

Need. More. Photos.
