The MaC22 project

Well it's been a while coming but I've picked up a 22 and am embarking on a journey to utilize the skills or lack of I picked up on the MaC19.

This will not be as epic as the MaC19 as my plans for this bike are as follows:

Get the bike running, currently it's not and has a suspected blown piston.

Clean it up, looks pretty good but if you suffer from a little OCD then you notice dirt in places most people don't care about.

Rebuild the brakes, the rear wheel is sticking a little and I think the piston cylinders need a hone. I will replace the pads and install some HEL braided lines while I'm at it.

Clean the carbs, they look pretty good but while it's apart why the fuck not. :D

I don't want to replace all the fairings or change the colour as they are in good condition and I think this colour appeals to the younger generation looking for there first bike. The only part I will replace is the rear fairing that wraps around the rear light.

I'll paint the engine and brake calipers and maybe even the forks but not 100% sure about those yet.

I'm working on a budget and want to sell the bike once I've registered it.

Enough shittalk, let the journey begin.......

Dad and I took a flying trip to Melbourne to pick up this.

I got it home and realized my shed was leaking (mainly from condensation) and I needed a place to work on the beast, so I ripped the roof sheets off, laid some saking (not the Japanese alcoholic type :D) and re-installed the sheets.

Hey Presto?

I now had a place to work.

Not very big but good enough.

When I visited the CBR whisperer I took note of his bike stand and thought "that is a fucking good idea", I'm not exactly a spring chicken and I started getting a sore back always bending down to work on the MaC19, so I built one.

WITH BITCHES!!!!!

:D

Representing the crew.

I now have a nice little place to call my own.

Got some shit to do so I'll continue this in the morning.

Hey mate, are you 100% sure about the ring sequence? I was talking to my old man about this build (he is a qualified mechanic BUT from 25+ yrs ago) and has built a fair few engines over his time. He said he has never built a engine where the squigly ring goes in the middle of the other two. He said the squigly ring goes on the bottom with the other two rings on top. After someone else in here mentioned it I thought MAYBE you are wrong. It has been many yrs since my old man was a mechanic so its very possible he is wrong but I thought I should mention it just in case :)
It's called an Oil Control Ring and it goes between the two outer rings.
yeah I can remember the GPZ rings having the squiggly one in the middle
Ok, sweet as. Better safe than sorry :)

Now my mate Bob was over and he loves forever black, (he introduced me to it) he attacked the chain guard and it turned out fucking sweet.

I got myself some forever black today & will be going to town with it on the bike & car when I'm not working. Cheers for the heads up on the gear
After asking about forever black in this thread before .. turns out I have a can that I didn't even know about :) I got some random things when I bought my bike, and that is one of them. Woot. Think I'll have to have a go with it ..
I got myself some mothers naturally black at the auto shop the other week I'm assuming this isn't the same stuff as it doesnt give the same effect.

Can you throw up a pic of it?
If you degrease the part first, then give it a quick wash in truck or car wash, a quick wipe with wax n grease remover the shine will be much deeper.

I think he means seperate rings. it goes top ring/aka compression ring which is just a normal straight ring. then second ring, then oil control ring (aka the squigly one) in some car sets the oil control ring comes as one piece (ie the squigly bit sandwhiched between 2 flat bits).

these guys are just talking about the oil control ring (coems in 3 pieces, flat bottom piece, squigly middle piece then flat top piece). not it's position in relation to the other rings. some engines just have 2 rings. 1 compression ring and an oil control ring.

so yeah what he was saying is 100% right but talking about 2 slighly different aspects of the ring set-up. :)
For Mr Foxtrot

Here is a pick of Forever Black, it's a two part cleaner/reviver.

The more you apply the better it is :D

OK it's time for an update.

I have done some work since the last post.

I started by re-installing the carbys, I was going to strip these down and clean them but wanted to check if the bike would run first as I was a little too keen to see if it would run.

I then re-attached the exhaust, I really didn't think this was sitting around for so long but someone decided to make a home out of it :D

I decided to leave him be, he would move out when things got a little hot and loud i'm sure.

Zorst on, not much room to take photos i'm afraid.

A few wires and some fresh fuel and then it was time to connect the tank.

Lights were working so that was a good start.

I hit the button and got nothing........what the fuck......oh, the kill switch......dickhead :D

I hit the switch and after the fuel got up HEY FUCKING PRESTO? It started and was running really well.

I don't remember much after that as I was on cloud9 dancing around the shed like an old mole at a tea party :D

I did have a leaking exhaust as one of the bolts was a little tight so rather than fix it I tried to tighten it and snapped it off :-/

These bolts are probably the worst to try to undo as the are steel and the head is alloy and with the heat and stuff they grow into the head.

So I called up dad for some advice and he came over and we started operating.

There is the prick.

And here is the mess we made in the shed removing it, I must admit Dad is a lot more patient than I am I would have had the shits long before he did.

We did get it in the end though :D

I put some new bar ends on.

Then I re-installed the front wheel.

Rear wheel.

I soaked the chain in oil for about two weeks just to help free it up, I've gotten oil everywhere but it's back on.

Forever black is the blackest black and it's black that's whack and if your mum doesn't buy it for you for christmas then she probably doesn't love you........

The previous quote may not be true and has been indorsed by no one of any importance, the chances are your mother does love you but just doesn't know you want forever black for christmas.

Speedo attached.

Now I ordered HEL braided lines on October 6th and recieved a confirmation e-mail on the 7th. About two weeks ago I e-mail then questioning there where abouts, I then got a phone call telling me they were at the Orange post office waiting to be picked up.....ummmmm I live in Wagga. Oh how close to Orange are you........about four hours.......oh so you don't want to pick them up.......no. Oh well maybe we can have them sent back here and then re-send them..........yeah, good idea.

So I'm now expecting them to show up Tuesday.

I've left the fairings off for now until i've connected the brakes up, here are how it now sits.

Enjoy your week gentlemen.

Really enjoyed reading this thread. Looking to do the same on a CBR250RR but minus the lunched engine. What would you rate your mechanical abilities on a scale of 1-10? Not sure if I'm going to be in over my head haha.
