As the title says, can anyone tell me what this part is, and its purpose?
It is the junction between all the hoses running to and from the engine.
It is attached right in the middle of the frame.

It seems like it allows the fluids which run through it to flow in one direction only. I opened it up to give it a clean and it was absolutely spotless. There was an object in the middle with a spring on the underside.

RE: What part is this?

it looks to be a thermostat.

i bet one of those hose's comes from the bottom of the radiator? i'm thinking the thicker of the three and the other two run into your engine, into your water jacket to be precise.

RE: What part is this?

awesome, very interesting stuff.[hr]
I just ran a test and dunked it in almost boiling water to watch it work.
mind blown.
I learnt something today :)[hr]
Question: is it meant to sit flush in the housing?
mine rattles around abit and theres a two millimeter gap between the flange and the housing and it doesn't form a complete seal when closed.
Is that too much of an issue?

LOL!

as for it sitting flush, I can't say. If it doesn't hold watertight, probably needs attention. In most cars/bikes, there is a gasket sealy type thing between the thermo and the block, stopping it from leaking. By pulling it off, you probably ruined it, but no worries, easy to make.

In fact, while you have the engine in your loungeroom or wherever, probably a good idea to replace all the things like that. They're probably cheap as balls for a new one.

I can help you do it with some liquid gasket from the land of extreme deals...
