Ok so I'm in the process of stripping the paint off my fairings to paint them.

At the moment I'm taking it back to absolutely bare plastic with no paint in sight, the only problem is that it takes AGES.

Surely if I get the clear coat off and rough up the underlying layer quite a bit I could just spray putty it and then put the new coats ontop of that?

Crutch?

Cheers

nah you just want to sand it nice and smooth no noticable bumpy bits then i just applied a nice white primer and just painted straight over once the primer was dry

i have just finished painting my bike if you take it back to bare plastic you will need to prepsol plastic primer then primer sand with wet 400-800 to rub back the primer then prepsol then paint.

if your using the paint as a undercoat make sure you dont mix the kinda paint thats on the bike with what your about to paint as the thiners will eat some paints

Just make sure your paints are compatible. I'd suggest doing a test spray before you get all hunky dory happy on your sanding finish. Just spray a bit and leave it and see how it goes then sand it back so you get back to your nice smooth surface.

you dont need to take the paint back to the plastic, i almost never do
1)120 grit and bog on the old paint untill all the shine is removed
2)followed by spray putty
3)then again with 120
4)spray putty again
you can skip steps 1-4 on good undamaged surfaces
then go with 400 or 600 grit depending on the paint
then its ready for paint,
