Vibrating handle bars.

4589 Views 17 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  eddd
So sometimes when i'm riding, and take my hands of the bars for some yoga or something, the handlebars vibrate. Its not that bad, but its really annoying..

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing it? Wheel balance? If it were a car i'd get the wheels aligned, but alas, it is not.

Help appreciated.

WTF!?

1. You take your hands off the bars while riding?
2. Yoga while riding?

Yeah, well not actual yoga, just the morning streches... And sometimes I take them both off to see how much it vibrates. It kinda comes and goes.
Your steering head bearings are probably a bit loose.

Undo the pinch bolts on your top triple clamp and the big nut on the top of the steering stem. Underneath the top triple you will see two circular adjusting nuts which are designed for a C-spanner. The bottom nut adjusts the bearing tension, the top one is a locknut.

If you don't have a C-spanner of the right size and you are gentle you can adjust these nuts with a flat head screwdriver and a mallet, but you do have to be gentle. Undo the locknut and tighten the adjuster nut, then re tighten the locknut. Then do up the pinch bolts and the large top nut.

When the bearings are at the correct tension the steering should still move freely and without resistance but will not shake when you take your hands off the handlebars at speed.

You can align motorcycle wheels but i don't have long so i can't explain sorry.

Sounds to me like your front tyre has gone off a bit mate. As the tyre wears the balance is upset somewhat.

It's quite common. You can have the wheel balanced again if it bothers you, but it will go away when you get your front replaced. I bet it is not far off it.

Yeah probably not a bad idea.

And yeah, I have bar ends.
genuinally interested in knowing what difference having one or no barends would have?

ive been without one of mine or like 2 months now, been meaning to get it replaced but seeing as its not life threatening, i havent bothered?

im guessing it has something to do with wind resistance at speeds?
^^^ lol
