You'll definately get a letter in the mail. They will give you an option to choose the date that your suspension starts or they will choose one for you.
I got 6 months for 45km's over when a bus pulled out on me. I cracked the shits and over took the bus and the car in front of it which happened to be a D-car. Lucky me.
I rode for another 1.5 months then got a letter which asked me for a date to start my suspension on, then faxed it back.
You shouldn't have to hand your licence in unless you are disqualified which is different to suspension. More for DD's etc.
